I have to say that I think Simons 'instructional' video is terrible. He takes the time to show us how he comes up with the rhythms for his tunes but fails to realise that not everyone has a drum kit with 2 bass drums, sh*t loads of cymbals, about 15 toms and 4 octobans to the left! What's the point? I suppose that for the die hard Phillips fan it would be interesting, but personally I can't watch it... as for standing on your bass drum and "watching out for any stones your sneakers" ... hmmmm!! I disagree, I think Simon's videos are very good. As to size of kit, the same could be said for The different incarnations of Weckls kits in the 3 different series of videos he has done. There was the first 2 videos he did with the RC kit, then the 2 videos he did with Wally Snr with the Maple kit and the new 3 series videos with the super kit. He plays a mass amount of cymbals too.
For the record, it was not rocks he was looking for in the shoes it was razor blades. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Razors eh?!?! I stand corrected! I agree that Weckl had big kits in his videos, but he was concerned with techniques, stickings, different grooves, feels and dynamics. Daves video prepares the beginner or advanced drummer for different playing styles and situations. Phillips' video was dealing with specific patterns that he came up with that can only be executed on HIS drum kit. My point being that no-on has his kit with the tonnes of gear that he has and therefor unless you really want his rhythms slowed down and disected for your own information, it seems a pretty pointless task... After the viewer has gone "oh, so THAT'S what he's doing", they can't reproduce it as it is so complex and involves masses of drum gear that they probably haven't got.

Wel if you are creative enough it could be done to recreate the patterns without having as many drums Simon uses.
I still say his videos are worth while.

I have to disagree... I watched and enjoyed both of Simon's videos immensely as a teenager, and gained a LOT of useful info...

Some of the patterns you can still use without having octobans, gong drum etc... it might even open up your playing with new and interesting ideas on how to use different sound sources...things you probably hadn't considered or didn't think were possible before...

It's like when someone hears a neat double bass part and tries to replicate it on one bass drum, not realising that the drummer in fact is using two bass drums, and thusly gaining some sick single pedal technique...(case in point; Rodney Holmes...)

I have the two Simon Phillips videos. They're very well produced the tunes are great. Simon's playing is excellent and the drums sound fantastic. I actually love all the examples where he slows it down to show what he's doing. I tell my students that the greatest drumming can always be slowed down and analyzed. Once you break it down, you realize that it's not that unapproachable.

I've been doing this bit during lessons where I'll record my student playing some patterns between the feet and hands around the kit with a click track (using the V-drums). Next, I'll crank up the tempo, (the pitch stays the same) play it back, and say "now this is what you can expect this to sound like if you're willing to invest the practice time". It's typically an eye-opening experience for them...."wow, that's me?"

I even use this technique when I'm laboring through some new practice routine and wondering about where I'm headed with all this effort.

I bought SP's 1st solo CD ['88] at 1 of his late-80's clinics ['88 or 9, of which i also have on casst-tape/*aaagh* [img]graemlins/sure.gif[/img] SOMEWHERE]... it ROX... killer drumg, GREAT drum sound AWA the overall mix... he also played ALL of the instrument parts on there [mostly on synth-keys]...

I haven't seen either of simons videos and presently have no intention of buying them. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I used to be a phillips nut in the early 80's when simon was gigging under RMS. (ray russel,mo foster and simon).
They produced a Great album under that title called Centinnal Park.

stanley clarks rocks peebles and sand is another excellent album as is the fusion stuff he played on Gary moores Back on the street and Jeff becks there and back.
There also an album produced By zappa with shakti i believe.
